LAX Announces Retail Overhaul With SH&E’s CAM

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Press Release - March 9, 2005

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has appointed the Center for Airport Management (CAM) to advise on an overhaul of its concession programme at Los Angeles International airport. The consultancy will work with LAWA on a concessions strategic development plan, which will set the blueprint for retail at the airport for the next 10-15 years.

The plan will review the 18 concession contracts covering 132 food and beverage, gift and news, specialty retail and duty-free stores at Los Angeles. All current concessions, most of which have been in place since the early 1990s, expire within the next three years, the majority at the end of 2006. The plan will include an accelerated programme for addressing the expiring contracts.

[CAM itself is a division of SH&E, the world’s largest and oldest aviation consulting firm. The two firms combined in 2004 to create a full-service concession and revenue-enhancement capability serving the needs of both airports and airlines. With approximately 100 aviation professionals worldwide, SH&E with CAM provides value-added services and management consulting to airlines, airports, manufacturers, financial institutions, and governments around the world.]

A LAWA report said: "It is important for customer satisfaction and revenue generation to address changes in consumer preferences and terminal operations, especially those driven by security considerations."

A spokeswoman for LAWA told RavenFox.com that the move was good news for retailers. "Last time we had a master plan was in the early nineties and it led to the opening of lots of new concessions," she said.

CAM was chosen out of three parties bidding for the contract. The company, headed by Shelly Klapper, has consulted over many airport retail developments, including the Oregon Market at Portland International airport. The company, which has offices in Portland and Chicago, assists airports with concession planning, solicitation and selection of concessionaires, and property management.
In the fiscal year 2004 Los Angeles' concession programme generated $66m of revenue for LAWA.
